Lewin & Lausev lead Lady Firebirds to NY State Championship Berth

Juniors Maureen Lewin and Brianna Lausev ran to the best 1-2 Firebird CHSAA Intersectional finish ever in helping their team to a third-place bronze plaque finish at the 44th Annual Girls CHSAA Intersectional (Catholic) State Championship cross country meet.

Lewin’s third-place time of 15:29 places her in lofty company as she is the fourth fastest Firebird performer at oft run Van Cortlandt Park. Current NCAA Division 1,800 meter record holder, Jazmine Fray, has the school record of 15:14. Lausev ran to a courageous fifth-place finish of 15:47, also her best, with her peak performance placing her fifth on the KMHS all-time list.

Maya Richardson was Kellenberg’s third scorer, with Nora Bennett placing well in a strong comeback performance. Ashley Minns and Anita Mikowski ran to personal best performances, and Captain Julia Bryant completed the varsity.

This is the Lady Firebirds seventeenth team qualifying trip to the State Federation Meet held at Bowdoin Park in upstate New York, next Saturday.

Firebird Claire Burns won the individual title in the JV race in a lifetime best performance. Lauren Bernic, Bridget Lapham, Margaret McLoughlin, Erin Doherty also ran to Van Cortlandt Park lifetime bests in leading the JV to a commanding team win. Senior Captains Grace Browne and Maggie Cannatella completed the top seven with an additional senior, Nicole Targia, running to her lifetime best as well in her last high school cross country race.
