Maureen Lewin took the individual title in 15:58 for the 2.5 mile cross country course, leading her teammates to an overwhelming victory at the CHSAA Sophomore Intersectional Championships at storied Van Cortlandt Park today.

Lewin was the first Kellenberg girl in eight years to win this race. The last Firebird winner, Kim McKay, went on to win the NY State 800 meter championships before embarking on a stellar collegiate career at Princeton University. Lewin was the third Kellenberg sophomore to break 16 minutes for the rugged course; in addition to McKay, KMHS alumna Kelsey Malmquist set the meet record of 15:27 in 2003. Malmquist went on to a stellar career at Georgetown University.

The Firebirds efforts today were a total team effort in the twenty school field. Brianna Lausev was fifth, and Maya Richardson was ninth. Clare O’Hara ran the best race of her young career in scoring as the Firebird’s fourth girl. Erin Doherty finished her fine season as Kellenberg’s fifth scorer. Meaghan Capitelli and Samantha Schuler were the Firebirds other scorers. The young ladies, both Sectional and Intersectional Sophomore Champions of this season, will join their older teammates in their quest for a Varsity and JV Intersectional title next week.
