Present for the retreat were Michael Messina, Patrick Ilardi, Keith Sherry, George Reese, Paulina Valentine, Nicholas Valentine, Christian Sanford, Sean Walsh, D’Yonce Williamson, James Dionisio, Mr. Moncada, Mrs. Willi and Ms. Meyers-Rizzuto.

The 15th Annual Veterans Tribute Dinner

On Thursday, November 10th, the Kellenberg Memorial cafeteria was filled with the Red, White and Blue and an incredible sense of patriotism. On this Thursday, the History Club paid tribute to its nation’s armed forces at the 15th Annual Veterans Tribute Dinner. The cafeteria turned into a museum of sorts filled with artifacts from our nation’s esteemed military history. Mr. Bursig brought with him friends who dressed in period uniforms ranging from the Civil War to World War II.

The real purpose of the evening was to honor those who have or who are currently serving in the military. There were over two hundred and sixty guests in attendance. It was quite a sight to the pride in our students bringing their family members who have served in the military. The night began with the master of ceremonies for the evening, senior Jordan Bernhardi. He began by introducing Kellenberg’s own Boy Scout Troop 87 who presented the colors for the evening. The senior members of the Firebird Swing to sing the National Anthem followed this. The entire Firebird Swing Chorus would later regale the entire cafeteria with a wonderful concert of modern and traditional songs. The rest of the night was filled with various presentations from different members of the History Club. Danielle Giordano taught us to remember those who were lost or still missing in action with a wonderful tribute to the POW/MIA. Danielle Moynihan led a beautiful grace before the entire cafeteria enjoyed a fitting Thanksgiving dinner. Maggie Oriani expressed the importance of working hard and how attending the Military Academy at West Point is fulfilling her life long dream. Tom Greco reminded us how important the support for the military is by honoring his uncle who served during the Vietnam War. And lastly, Gerard D’Angelis taught us that real heroes do not wear capes and we need to look to our veterans for inspiration.

The night was capped with a performance by Kellenberg’s bagpipe club under the direction of Mr. Emmett Collins with the likes of God Bless America. Last, but not least the names of every veteran in attendance was read as they all received a certificate of appreciation for their service. Overall, it was a job well done by the History Club and a sense of patriotism that lasted well throughout the night.

Article by Maura Lynch (’19); On Saturday, November 12, The Kellenberg Speech and Debate Team hosted the Catholic Forensic League of Rockville Centre Interleague Speech Tournament. The Interleague i tournament is one in which the participants vary between the Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens and New York City districts. Seventeen of our own students competed in over six different categories. All of the Kellenberg team performed well, with varying degrees of success. With some students progressing as far as finals, the team found this to be an incredible learning experience. Each individual member of the team gained more experience and learned by watching others compete in their respective categories. Coaches, Mr. Cioffi, Mr. Champney, Miss. Frisina, Mrs. York, Mr. Cummings and Mr. Cartier, all provided valuable instruction and led the team even closer to victory.

Congratulations to Kaitlin Byrnes ‘18 (Dramatic Performance) and Christian Licato ‘18 (Original Oratory) for placing 7th and 13th respectively. This was a big accomplish for both students, especially for Christian as this was his first tournament. Overall, the team continues to practice and work hard to qualify for the NYSFL State Tournament in April.

Lewin & Bennett Among Top Finishers at State Meet

The New York State Federation Cross Country Championship Meet regarded as the, “most competitive Girls state Championship Meet in the US,” proved no differently this year. For the past eight years New York girls’ teams have had four of the top-ten nationally ranked teams in the country each year, including National Champion Fayetteville-Manlius of Syracuse.

This year nationally fifth-ranked North Rockland won the meet, with perennial national contender Saratoga finishing third. To finish in the top twenty of the qualified 27-team field is quite an achievement!

Led by sophomore Maureen Lewin and junior captain Nora Bennett, who ran virtually in tandem the whole rigorous 5-kilometer route, the team of those two, Julia Bryant, Brianna Lausev, Maya Richardson, Anita Mikowski, and Bridget Lapham, the Kellenberg Girls finished seventeenth, again as Long Island’s top private school and one of the top five downstate teams. Lewin ran 20:26 and Bennett ran 20:30 for the hilly 3.1 mile course.

Junior Varsity Cheerleading

Most Improved
Daniella King

daniella-king

Daniella King has grown as a flyer throughout her Kellenberg cheerleading career.  This season her confidence in her own skills has grown, and she has willingly tried, and mastered new skills throughout the season.  The speed at which she perfects her abilities allows her to move on and try new elite skills faster than we expect it.  She never stops trying new things, and continues to surprise us as coaches, her own stunt group and herself each and every day.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Dominique Basso

dominique-basso

This season’s Bernie Ward Commitment award winner is Dominique Basso.  Her commitment to this team leads her to work on not only improving herself, but to spend countless hours helping others improve their skills. Whenever we need something done, we know she’s the one to go to.  Her positive attitude infiltrates the entire team throughout a practice. She always encourages teammates around her, helping the entire team improve as a whole.  Dominique is this year’s Bernie Ward Commitment award winner, because she truly understands the concept of a team, and doing what it takes to make her and the team, the best it could be.

Most Valuable Player
Aideen Crowley

aideen-crowley

This year’s most valuable cheerleader impresses us day after day, fearlessly trying new skills.  Her cheerful attitude at practice makes her talent that much more notable. Always standing out in a good way, she sets the bar high for all of those around her.  No matter what we are working on, she is trying to perfect it, and then try something bigger and better.  Her natural talents, along with her desire to succeed make Aideen Crowley this season’s MVP.

Freshman Cheerleading

Most Improved
Lola Lechleider

lola-lechleider

Lola Lechleider has grown tremendously since the first day of her cheerleading career. Three months later she has proven to be one of the strongest bases on the team by mastering any skill asked of her and doing so confidently and with a smile. She has pushed herself throughout the season to perfect her jumps and motions. Lola’s work ethic and drive have helped her become an extraordinarily talented cheerleader and we are so excited to see her develop even further as a Kellenberg Cheerleader.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Charlotte D’Alessandro

-Common-Import-Images-Thumbnails-UnavailableImage

Charlotte D’Alessandro has shown 100% dedication to the sport of cheerleading since she first put on a Kellenberg cheerleading uniform.  Her positive attitude and drive for perfection have demonstrated what being a member of this team means to her. There are no limits to the hard work and drive Charlotte puts into each practice.  The coaches can rely on her to fill any position and do so happily.  Her commitment towards her teammates, coaches, and the sport shows each and every practice and we are so lucky to have her as a member of this team.

Most Valuable Player
Nicole Mathison

nicole-mathison

Nicole Mathison truly represents what it means to be a Kellenberg cheerleader. Throughout the season the coaches could always count on her to have a positive attitude and an open mind to anything put her way. As one of the strongest bases on the team she never once complained that something was too difficult or scary for her.  She has excelled in her jumps and tumbling throughout the season and never settled for anything less than perfect. She demonstrates exceptional leadership values and truly has a bright future within the cheerleading program.

Boys Freshman Cross Country

Most Improved
Christopher Gazis

christopher-gazis

Christopher Gazis constantly worked hard to improve his times. Due to his hard work, Christopher improved dramatically this season dropping over 2 minutes off his best time. He went from starting off the season on the Freshman B team to running fast enough to be a member of the A team. The Most Improved Runner Award goes to Christopher Gazis.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Cameron Mooney

cameron-mooney

Cameron Mooney was consistently our 2nd scorer for the team throughout the season. Cameron ran a great 2nd league for our relay team at the NYC Cross Country Relay Carnival to help us secure team medals. He showed good leadership. He led by example. He made sure that everyone was staying on task. The Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to Cameron Mooney.

Most Valuable Player
Aidan Potter

aidan-potter

Aidan Potter was our top runner in every race this season. Aidan had a top 10 finish at the Regis Invitational. He ran a great leadoff leg to help lead the team to medals at the NYC Cross Country Relay Carnival. This year’s Freshman Cross Country MVP goes to Aidan Potter.

Girls Freshman Cross Country

Most Improved
Nicole Aponte

nicole-aponte

Shakespeare once famously said, “Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible.” This young lady started the season by running the 1.5 Sunken Meadow course over 12 minutes and barely making the top seven of her team. She finished her season in a most strong fashion by running that same course in ten minutes and twenty-six seconds and being the critical #2 scorer for us at the NSCHSGAA Freshman championships. We are honored this morning to bestow Nicole Aponte with the Cross Country Most Improved award.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Sarah Killian

sarah-killian

A quiet young woman, who keeps on plugging, never drawing attention towards herself, this young lady also enjoyed improvement in leaps and bounds. Famed University of Oregon coach Bill Dellinger once said, “Good things come slowly-especially in distance running.” This young lady must have known this, as her patient persistence built her to a competitive runner. She was our consistent #3 performer, and we are honored to award Sarah Killian the freshman cross country Bernie Ward Commitment Award.

Most Valuable Player
Catherine Cooke

catherine-cooke

This young woman was our consistent top performer from late September until the November freshman Intersectionals. She had three outright dual meet wins at Sunken Meadow Park and a sixth place finish at the NSCHSGAA Championship meet. We are honored this morning to bestow the freshman girls cross country award to Catherine Cooke.

Junior Varsity “A” Football

Most Improved
Kristopher LaFroscia

kristopher-lafroscia

On a team in which there is a lot of individual talent, it is tough to find a “most improved” player. However, Kris was one specific player that went from being good as a freshman, to being great at the end of his sophomore year. Kris started on the defensive line last year on JV-B and started the year in a 4-man rotation on our defensive line. As the season went on, we found ourselves trying to plug Kris into different positions on both offense and defense – a testament to his relentless work ethic. Kris is now a starter on defense, and our best Guard on offense, a position that he only started to master this year.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Daniel Wilson

daniel-wilson

Dan Wilson is the prime example of “putting the team first”. Dan entered the season as a starting wide receiver and a starting defensive end. However, because of a void that needed to be filled, we asked Dan to play Center on offense, not something a receiver would want to do. Without any hesitation, Dan agreed to our request and has started every game since. Dan’s willingness to change positions is not the only reason he is receiving this award. Dan is consistently found in the weight room after practice at voluntary lifts, and is always trying to make his teammates better around him. Nothing seems to be more important to him than the team’s success.

Most Valuable Player
Matthew Sluka

matthew-sluka

As the quarterback, punter, kicker and captain of our team, there was a lot of responsibility placed into Matt’s hands this year. We not only expected him to master the offense as the returning quarterback, but to lead his teammates who still needed to learn. We as coaches could not be more proud of how he handled all of this. Matt led the team in rushing touchdowns with 18 and threw for 8 more, while also having the ability to “make something out of nothing” on countless occasions throughout the season, making him the most dangerous player on the field at all times. Matthew is Kellenberg JV Football’s first 2x MVP, a deserved distinction for an exceptional young man.

Junior Varsity “B” Football

Most Improved
Brian Kelleher

brian-kelleher

Brian Kelleher has the commitment and work ethic to be a very talented athlete.  Brian was our starting center by the end of the year and did a great job for the team.  Brian often stayed after practice to lift and work on improving his skills.  Brian wants to excel and we look forward to witnessing Brian’s progression over the next 3 seasons.  Brian Kelleher is this year’s JV Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Dan Settino

dan-settino

There is a tremendous amount of talent on this team.  There’s speed, strength, and toughness.  Dan Settino was all of those things.  He has tremendous potential.  More importantly, Dan represents all the values taught at Kellenberg Memorial.  He has been a pleasure to work with and a real class act.  Dan Settino is this year’s JV B Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner.

Most Valuable Player
Bo Jules

bo-jules

Bo Jules was one of the best backs in the league.  Bo has incredible agility and is a very tough running back.  If Bo continues to mature and progress he will have a very bright future as a football player.  This year’s MVP is Bo Jules.

Boys Junior Varsity “A” Soccer

Most Improved
Rocco Loscalzo

 rocco-loscalzo

When we started the season we weren’t sure where Rocco would fit in on the field. Rocco fought hard every day at practice and performed at high levels during our most difficult games. As the season progressed Rocco became a central figure of our defense and created instant offense with his long throw-ins. Rocco was a consummate teammate and will be missed next year.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
John Carroll

john-carroll

John Carroll is the ultimate team player. He was a returning forward from last year’s JV “A” team and we had high hopes for him this year at this position. But, when injuries and illness affected the team we had some holes to fill. John, without any complaining, took over our outside midfield position and performed beautifully. He plays every second of the game with great intensity and is a fantastic role model for the way sports are supposed to be played. His leadership will be missed as he moves up to Varsity next fall.

Most Valuable Player
Shane Salmon

shane-salmon

Shane Salmon, a 2-year starter, has been the heart and soul of this team this season. Besides having an excellent understanding of the game and superb skills, his growth as a leader has made him our most valuable player. He was our eyes on the field and kept everyone at ease under the most pressure-filled parts of the game.

Boys JV “B” Soccer

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Matthew Byrne

matthew-byrne

The most committed award is always a tough award to assign to just one player. Many individuals on the team contribute every day at practice with great energy no matter how much playing time they receive. One player was the clear frontrunner. He came into tryouts in amazing shape and gave the team a blueprint of what “heart” means as an athlete. He was a leader on the field, never complained about how tired he was and always gave us an advantage with his hustle. To have this player for two years in a row was a true blessings and I feel very lucky to be a part of his athletic career. Perhaps his greatest example of his commitment to his team was in our semi-final game against St. Anthony’s he volunteered to play goalie after we suffered some injuries to our starting goalie and turned in one of the most inspiring performances of the year. This year it is a pleasure to give out the Bernie Ward commitment award to Sophomore Captain Matthew Byrne.

Most Improved
Tommy Schiller

thomas-schiller

This year’s most improved award was a difficult award to give out to just one player because our ENTIRE team improved tremendously. However, this individual was not a starter in the beginning of the year and the coaching staff had a tough time finding a spot for him on the pitch even though he had a tremendous tryout. However, by the second half of the season he became our starting outside midfielder and leading scorer. His fearless play, quiet personality, and team first attitude helped inspire his team to give it their all in hopes of coming out on top. Perhaps his greatest performance was his four-goal effort late in the season against league rival Saint Dominic’s. It is with great honor that this year’s Most Improved Award to freshman Tommy Schiller.

Most Valuable Player
Sean DeLuca

sean-deluca

This year’s Most Valuable Player Award is an award that the coaching staff had a few options on who to give it to. We had individuals who score a multitude of goals and who are offensive juggernauts and give MVP-like performance on the field. However, one player, who from day one of tryouts back in August continued to standout. Often times due to his position he doesn’t get recognized for his achievements because he doesn’t score a lot of goals. However, having him as the anchor of a stingy defense, that doesn’t get enough credit allowed us to stay in games and gave us an opportunity to succeed all year long. His knowledge of the game, and willingness to never take a play- off showed that he was a remarkable talent on the field. He was our “work horse” every game and the coaching staff only wishes him the best in the future. Perhaps his best game was the semi- final match against St. Anthony’s where he gave us the led on a 35 yard free kick and then had the responsibility of guarding the league’s top striker limiting him to just three shots. This year’s MVP award goes to freshman captain Sean DeLuca.

Girls Junior Varsity “A” Soccer

Most Improved
Kate Buttiglione

kate-buttiglione

The Most Improved Player Award goes to Kate Buttiglione. Kate started the season off as a forward but rose to the occasion when the opportunity to show off her goal-keeping skills presented itself. By the end of the season, she was the starting keeper and played an amazing game in the championship match. Kate never gave up all season long and her tenacity exemplified that hard work pays off.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Sofia Rinaldi

sofia-rinaldi

Sofia Rinaldi is the recipient of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award. Through the highs and lows of the season, Sofia always showed a high-level commitment to this team through her leadership skills as a co-captain both on and off the field. Individually she showed her dedication to the team by pushing herself to be the best player she could be in order to help the team. Sofia was a pleasure to coach and a role model for her younger teammates.

Most Valuable Player
Paulina Valentine

paulina-valentine

The Most Valuable Player Award for the JVA girls soccer team goes to Paulina Valentine. Paulina was a game changer and had the ability to play any position on the field. As a co-captain she led by example and always gave 110% in both practices and games. She was a force to be reckoned with as an offensive threat to all our opponents. She led the team with 9 goals for the season.

Girls Junior Varsity “B” Soccer

Most Improved
Alessia Pecorella

-Common-Import-Images-Thumbnails-UnavailableImage

This year’s Most Improved Player is Alessia Pecorella. Over the course of the season, Alesia proved herself every single day. She became a player that I could depend on and know she would do a great job on the field. Alessia worked her way into the starting defensive line. The coaches could always count on her to win a fifty-fifty ball and knew she was always playing her hardest. Alessia was also very dedicated to this team. She would always go the extra mile to improve her skills or help her teammates through a drill. It was so amazing to watch her improve so much over the season. The coaches are honored to give Alessia this year’s Most Improved Player Award.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Adanya Jeudy

adanya-jeudy

This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award winner is Adanya Jeudy. Adanya has shown her dedication to this team since day one. She was always willing to help bring the equipment to and from the field, and made sure everyone on the team was happy. The moment when Adanya’s dedication truly shined was right before an important game. In the huddle,  she asked if she could read a prayer that she had written for the team. The prayer was about using the gifts God has given to them to work together to win the game. She read this prayer before every game after that. Adanya showed her commitment to the team through this prayer and constantly working to improve her skills. We are proud to award Adanya with the Bernie Ward Commitment Award.

Most Valuable Player
Claire O’Regan

-Common-Import-Images-Thumbnails-UnavailableImage

The Most Valuable Player on this year’s JVB soccer team is Claire O’Regan. Claire was the unsung hero of this team. She is a quiet person, but on the field she made a huge impact. She was also one of the fastest girls on the roster. The coaches could always rely on her to give her best effort in every game. In the beginning of the season, we asked Claire to try playing outside midfield. It was a spot she was not used to playing, but without hesitation, she tried it. The fact that Claire was usually a forward, but played the whole season in outside midfield shows that she was extremely versatile. Claire is the most valuable player, because we knew that she could play any position, and give her best effort no matter what. We are honored to name Claire O’Regan as our most valuable player.

Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball

Most Improved
Mackenzie Good

mackenzie-good

Most Improved goes to Mackenzie Good. Mackenzie came in as a back row player without much playing time. As the season went on, Mackenzie found herself more and more court action as she dedicated herself to rep after rep. Although, not a captain in a formal role, Good emerged as a leader, asking for extra help and rallying the team at some critical moments. Mackenzie found herself a starting position, earned through her tremendous work ethic. Mackenzie helped forge a solid serve receive pattern and became a staple for our defense. The coaches are incredibly proud!

Bernie Ward Commitment Award
Gabby Faya

gabby-faya

The Commitment award goes to an athlete who truly embodies the Kellenberg philosophy. This young woman sets a very high standard of work ethic and drive. A natural athlete, she pushed herself every practice- pushing through some difficult moments, she always found a way to rally and be a leader. This young woman has an exceptional attitude and her enthusiasm is contagious.  What is especially unique about this athlete is her kindness and her faith. While a gifted athlete, she maintains a perspective of what is most important in life. It is with great pride and joy the commitment award goes to Gabby Faya.

Most Valuable Player
Colleen Moulder

colleen-moulder

The MVP award goes to a young woman who is the picture of calm in the storm. This athlete is truly a “go-to” type of player. When the team is under pressure and we need to score, this young lady is the one the whole team trusts to have the ball. She is steady, and talented. She is strong and reliable. She is a force at the net and can also provide us passing and defense. She is knowledgeable about the sport and that gives her a tremendous edge. It is without question we are a better team and program with her on the court. In addition to her talent, she is a consummate leader. It is with great enthusiasm we award the MVP to sophomore, Colleen Moulder.

The Bernie Ward Commitment Award which is named after our beloved former faculty member, coach and colleague Bernie Ward is for the athlete who has displayed the most passion and commitment towards bettering themselves and their teammates during the season.

Called to Serve: Kellenberg Alumni Value Service Over Self

A preview of the cover story in the fall 2016 issue of Heart & Mind.

One of the first things that a student learns about upon entering Kellenberg Memorial is COR, which is the Latin word for heart, and also an important acronym that represents three principles at the heart of the school: Civility, Order, and Respect.  It is through the Kellenberg Memorial community’s dedication to COR that an atmosphere which promotes the cultivation of intellectual, moral, and spiritual values is able to flourish.

Upon graduation, Kellenberg Memorial alumni bring many lessons and experiences with them as they move onto the next chapter of their lives.  COR is not only something that stays with Firebird alumni; it serves as a larger, moral foundation for the adults they become.  Given the impact that Kellenberg’s COR principles have had on so many students, it is no surprise, then, that many alumni have been inspired to lead lives of service by serving our nation in various ways.  Whether they are in the Navy, Army, Marine Corps, or National Guard, many Kellenberg Memorial alumni are proud to value service over self in support of the United States of America.  Below are profiles of a small sample of alumni who are serving our nation.  All those in the armed forces remain in the prayers of the Kellenberg Memorial community.

Catholic League on Retreat at Founders Hollow

By Ismenia Ginebra ’18:

As Catholics, we are called to do much with our faith. In being witnesses to Jesus by serving one another in words and deeds, we are also called to be leaders. In a world that is hurting, we should take advantage of our Catholic education and use it to bring the truth everywhere we go.

In early November 2016, members of the Catholic League attended a retreat at Founders Hollow. The theme of the retreat focused on going out into the world and making a change through being a Catholic leader.

“I believe that it is important for our students, particularly the seniors, to use their years in high school as preparation to go out to college and beyond having the greatest impact they can on everyone they meet,” says Mr. Krug, moderator of the Catholic League. “The greatest impact you can have is inspiring others to go deeper into their faith. Many of our former Catholic League members have gone on to start great things in the colleges they attend.”

On the retreat, students watched a documentary called The Rise of Hope. This documentary covered the life of Pope Francis, from his beginnings in Argentina to his priesthood as well as important events he was a part of. It was very insightful to understand and see how Pope Francis, by being a leader, impacted many.

Our discussions throughout the retreat reflected our desires, uncertainties, questions, and opinions on various topics of the Catholic faith. I personally loved our discussion time because we learned so much from us all expressing and discussing our opinions. With much time in between spent in prayer and adoration, our retreat overall covered both active and contemplative aspects of our faith.

This retreat was such a privilege to go on; I truly enjoyed everything we did, and I can definitely say on behalf of all of us that we gained much insight on what a Catholic leader should look like and the attitude we should bring with ourselves. Mr. Krug says,“Catholic League is a place to go deeper in understanding our faith through sharing your questions and ideas with other kids who have the same strong interest.”

Kiersten, from the outside hitter position, snagged 390 kills, 283 digs, 243 receptions, 31 solo blocks, 47 assist blocks, and 36 aces. At Kellenberg, the acronym S.O.S. (Service Over Self) has definitely taken root in many of the students. Numerous clubs and teams have taken part in a variety of different service projects and have participated in school-wide drives held throughout the school year.

Last weekend, members of the Annunciation Project, along with Mrs. Harnisch and Mrs. Fiore, traveled to the mother house of the Sisters of Life to assist in a day’s work of service. “I decided to start the Annunciation Project because many girls were looking for ways to give back to Kellenberg,” says Mrs. Harnisch. “The Annunciation Project serves to bring girls together through fellowship, service, and prayer. And by having the connection to the Sisters of Life, the girls can see the beautiful vocations the sisters live out every day.” The mission of the Sisters of Life is to ensure the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of every human life from conception to natural death.

Upon arriving, the sisters immediately put us to work. Many took on different jobs throughout the day, assisting the sisters in any way which possible. From baking in the kitchen to cleaning to shoveling gravel and stuffing Christmas cards, it goes without saying that we worked very hard. Being with the sisters and their wonderful, joyful, and kind attitudes made these jobs fun and enjoyable!

Throughout the day, we also got to know the sisters through conversations and hearing them share their faith. Elizabeth Solferino ‘19, beautifully sums up her experience: “I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to have visited the sisters. Seeing the immense amount of joy and faith in all of them really had a huge impact on me. I overall enjoyed talking to them; they were just as eager to learn about me as I was about them.”

Kellenberg Students Visit NYIT Globesville

“It was a pleasure having them here at NYIT,” said Professor John Hanc, “they really enjoyed our program.” New York Institute of Technology students and professors in the video production class, “Globesville,” hosted 30 high school students and four of their advisors from Kellenberg Memorial High School on the Old Westbury Campus last week, in an effort to introduce them to the program, the school, and the atmosphere.

The Kellenberg students are part of a group of students participate in an activity called, E.T.V., which gives students the opportunity to film, direct and perform in a closed circuit TV program on their campus. “They are interested in the video journalism production filed,” said Hanc, explaining the exclusive invite. “So we wanted to introduce these potential students to our program.”

The high school students spent the morning interacting with NYIT students and professors learning about the Globesville program. Don Fizzinoglia, Comm. Arts Chairman at NYIT described Globesville as an interactive news and entertainment network for the NYIT global community. “Our student-run web channel is live and interactive using mobile device-driven new journalism,” said Fizzinoglia, who developed the program. “We share stories and report about sports, music, gaming, trends, entertainment, and campus life with students and alumni.”

Bringing the Kellenberg media students to visit the program, was a way to help inspire their ETV program, by giving them an opportunity to work hands-on with college students with similar professionals interests. “The introduction of high school students to the NYIT Communications arts department is a great way to let the students know what we have to offer,” said Hanc who is heading the development program.

NYIT adjunct professor Kevin Horton was on hand to welcome the students and participate in the three-hour-long program as well. Horton has a unique perspective on these two institutions, as he is an NYIT Communication Arts alumni and a Kellenberg parent: son is a graduate of Kellenberg and his daughter is a freshman. “Kellenberg and the Globesville program have the same philosophy, to provide the students with a rich quality educational experience in an interactive friendly atmosphere,” said Horton, advisor to NYIT’s student newspaper The Campus Slate, and also an instructor in the Globesville class. “It was great today, watching those two shared philosophies of education play out. The students…both from Kellenberg and NYIT…learned a lot.”

Junior Gillian Blackwood and senior Megan Carelus ran to a 1-3 finish at the annual NSCHSGAA Christmas Classic. That outstanding performance was the tone of the Meet for the Kellenberg girls track and field team. Nora Bennett and Brianna Lausev took first and second in the 3000 meters, both breaking 11 minutes, a Kellenberg first for two girls in the same race. The duo battled it out with two equally game and courageous St. John the Baptist runners before pulling away in the final lap. Sophomore Maureen Lewin and senior Ceara Conroy also finished first and second in the 1000 meters. Camryn Beckford won the Varsity 300 meters in 43.01 closing in on the freshman school record, with sophomore Chrissy Foster third. Junior Arielle Ramirez sprinted to the fastest 55 meters of her life in taking the bronze, part of a rebirth of the Kellenberg sprinters. It all adds up to a promising season for the Birds!

Cheerleading

Most Improved – Nicole Collins

The fall season most improved award goes to a young lady that has improved tremendously throughout her four years as a Kellenberg cheerleader. Throughout the fall season she has worked extremely hard in improving herself in all aspects of cheerleading. She has shown great improvement in her stunting ability and was determined to achieve new tumbling skills as well. She has truly come such a long way and we are so proud of the cheerleader she has become. The most improved Varsity cheerleader is Nicole Collins.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Victoria Jordan

This season’s Bernie Ward commitment award goes to a young lady who has fully dedicated herself to cheerleading for the past four years. She is one of the strongest back spots on the team and she always pushes herself and others to be better. She’s always ready to work with a smile on her face and her positivity is a driving force for the rest of her team. It has been a pleasure to coach this young lady and we are proud to recognize her hard work and commitment to the cheerleading program. The Varsity cheerleading commitment award goes to Victoria Jordan.

Most Valuable Player – Mary Claire Troy

This season’s MVP is a young lady who has worked tirelessly throughout the fall season to earn the title of most valuable. As a junior on the team, she was able to quickly pick up on the skills needed to be a Varsity level flyer. We are so impressed with her stunting ability and are so excited to see improvement in her tumbling skills as well. Her talent as a cheerleader is evident and she has become a role model for the rest of her teammates. We are so proud of how far this young lady has come and we can’t wait to watch her grow as a Varsity athlete. The fall season’s most valuable Varsity cheerleader is Mary Claire Troy.

Boys Cross Country

Most Improved – Chris Love

Chris Love started out the season on the Junior Varsity team. Chris has improved dramatically dropping almost a minute off his time from the start of the season. Chris improved so much that he was named to the NSCHSAA All-League team and he also qualified for the New York State Championship meet as an individual. This year’s Most Improved Runner goes to Chris Love.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Steven Hoffman

Steven Hoffman was a major part of our team’s success. Whether it was leading by example, as a team Captain, or being one our top scorers meet after meet, Steven was a big contributor to our team’s success. Steven performed so well this season that he was named to the NSCHSAA All-League First Team and he also qualified for the New York State Championship meet as an individual. The Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to Steven Hoffman.

Most Valuable Player – Josh Michel

Josh has been the team’s top scorer in almost every meet this past season. Early in our season, Josh broke the school record at the Six Flags Great Adventure meet. Josh achieved All NSCHSAA First Team Honors, All CHSAA First Team Honors and qualified for the New York State Championship meet as an individual. He has a bright future with this team. The Most Valuable Runner Award goes to Josh Michel.

Girls Cross Country

Most Improved – Maureen Lewin

Coming into the season as a sophomore with no previous experience in cross country, this young lady at first questioned herself as to the wisdom of her chosen activity. But with her signature work ethic and competitive focus, she went from being a surprise number three scorer for the team to its top finisher in the final championship meets. Along the way, she won a hard fought Sophomore Intersectional Championship title. She has the running community abuzz with that very progress and her promise for the future. We are honored to award the Most Improved Award to Maureen Lewin.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Julia Bryant

One of the leaders of this committed “tribe” of dedicated athletes, this young woman consistently was one of the team’s top three scorers, and winner of the team’s final dual meet which secured their undefeated season. She has a patient approach, not just with the training, but with her affable and caring nature towards others. America’s great marathoner Bill Rodgers once said, “My four Boston Marathon and three NYC marathon titles started with the example of noble teammates.” We are honored to award the Bernie Ward Commitment Award to junior Julia Bryant; to everyone, a “noble teammate.”

Most Valuable Player – Nora Bennett

Renowned philosopher and theologian Tryon Edwards, once said, “Thoughts lead on to purposes; purposes go forth in action; form habits; habits decide character; and character fixes our destiny.” This young woman had a thought, a goal, a purpose: to be the best cross country runner she could possibly be by season’s end. She put forth a plan immediately after her respite from the spring track season. She didn’t waver from it. By this focus and determination, she led through example the championship culture of character this team possesses. We honor junior Nora Bennett with our team’s Most Valuable Award.

Dance Team

Most Improved – Arielle Francois

This year’s Most Improved Player Award goes to a dancer who continually developed her technique and performance skills throughout the season. She is a valuable asset and incredible addition to the Varsity team. As the season progressed, she perfected her moves and adjusted her own dancing style to dance as one with her team members. She is always looking to improve and seeking the advice of coaches and captains in order to do so. We have seen her become a developed and gifted dancer. With her hard work ethic and practice, she will excel on the dance team in seasons to come. This year’s Most Improved Player Award goes to Junior, Arielle Francois.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Meaghan Smoak

This year’s Most Committed Award goes to a dancer who is an integral and influential part of the team. She has been invested in making our team better throughout the season. Her commitment to the team was most apparent not only on the dance floor, but in practice sessions as well. She was always willing and ready to try new dances and worked well with others to perfect her skills. When her coaches or teammates needed her, she was always there without hesitation. We are proud to have her as a member and captain of the Varsity Dance Team. This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to Senior and Captain, Meaghan Smoak.

Most Valuable Player – Amanda Greco

From the start of the season, we knew this young woman would be one of our most dedicated and strongest dancers. Her technique was always impressive and as the season progressed, it continued to mature. She possesses excellent leadership skills and was always willing to assist her teammates with learning new choreography for each dance. She shows unwavering commitment at all practices and was always willing to go above and beyond, especially to help her team and coaches. Her personality and mature demeanor has made it a pleasure to have her on the team. This year’s Most Valuable Player Award goes to Senior and Captain, Amanda Greco.

Football

Most Improved – Dillon Kirby

When you play middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense, you have to have two distinct qualities. One, you have to be big, and the second is you have to be tough. In our case, the young man we asked to play this position only had one of these characteristics. He wasn’t very big, but he was tough as nails. The other remarkable feat this young man was able to accomplish was that he never played middle linebacker before this season. Last year he was a part-time outside linebacker, and he ended this year as the captain and leader of the defense that finished up playing very good football. The winner of the most improved player award goes to senior Dillon Kirby.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Patrick Leahy

Over the course of a four-year high school career, you can see players who are committed to becoming football players and others who just want to be on a football team. This young man was not only committed to becoming a solid football player, he also was committed to the success of the team, which he always put before his own. That was evident in the effort he gave us in the off-season. To him it wasn’t just a season, it was truly his passion. Throughout this season we faced many trials and tribulations, and at the points when we were struggling the most, he truly played his best football. The winner of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award is Patrick Leahy.

Most Valuable Player – Marco Mongelli

The most valuable player this year also can be called the most versatile player on the team. He was asked to play no less than six different positions this year: Quarterback, wide receiver, running back, defensive back, kick-off return man, and field goal holder. Every time he was moved to a different position, we seemed to improve there as well as improve as a team. When you go into games and your opponents clearly have spent time committing to stop this player, you see how valuable he is to you. He also never questioned anything we asked him to do, and it was a privilege to have coached this young man. The winner of the most valuable player award goes to Marco Mongelli.

Gymnastics

Most Improved – Bila Bonifacio

This award is being presented to Bila Bonifacio, a gymnast that has shown the most dedication to her craft and to her team.  As a freshman, it is hard to start at a new school as well as join a varsity team with girls that you have never met before.  Bila was always up for the challenge, whether it was competing for the first time on beam and sticking her routine all the way through or becoming a significant part the vaulting line up.  The morale of the team was always that much higher with Bila around.  Her work ethic is something to be truly admired.  This gymnast is a great athlete and teammate, and that is why Bila Bonifacio is being recognized as the Most Improved Gymnast this season.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Margaret Oriani

The gymnast receiving this award was a crucial part of the team this year.  She has been committed to this gymnastics team for the past three years and we are so lucky to have had her.  As a senior captain, she was able to pull the team together and show pure dedication to her team day in and day out.  Every day may not have been a good one, but this gymnast was at practice giving it her all and willing to help whomever was in need.  She was able to secure the highest score of her balance beam career this season at one of our final home meets. I know this athlete will achieve success in whatever it is she chooses to do because of her resilience and determination.  The Bernie Ward Commitment Award is being presented to Margaret Oriani.

Most Valuable Player – Allison Chin

Allison Chin is a senior captain and has dedicated the last four years to the Kellenberg Varsity Gymnastics team.  Allison was always a force to be reckoned with even on her worst day.  At every meet and on every event, Allison was the anchor that helped the team secure a win or obtain our best team scores.  As an All-Around gymnast, all four of the event scores she earned counted towards the team totals.  She never disappointed her teammates no matter what the circumstances were standing in front of her.  I congratulate Allison Chin on an amazing four years as a Kellenberg Varsity gymnast and award her as the Most Valuable Player.

Boys Varsity Soccer

Most Improved – Andrew Sluka

Andrew started the season as a player who came off the bench, but through hard work and unexpected circumstances he evolved into becoming an important part of this team.  Andrew played for half the season as a defender and upon the return of some key injuries, Andrew was then asked to play as a forward.  Andrew contributed offensively during our three-game winning streak that secured third place in the league this season.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Timothy Betz

The coaching staff could not have asked for a more selfless player on the team.  Tim entered the season playing as a center forward, though he felt it would be better for the team if he played as a midfielder.  Without any reservation, Tim did his job and played his heart out in every game which contributed to our successful playoff run and finished the season leading the team in points with twelve.

Most Valuable Player – Nicholas D’Amato

Nicholas was the most reliable player on the team this season.  He played in every game and finished the season at the top of the leaderboard with eighty-five saves. Without Nicholas in goal, things could have been different for this team as some of his saves wowed many fans in the stands.  The coaching staff is excited that the best goalkeeper in the league will be returning to play for the Firebirds in his senior season.

Girls Varsity Soccer

Most Improved – Anna Lieza Bradshaw

This player did not see a lot of playing time her Junior year. Entering her Senior year she came back with a vengeance.  She came into preseason fit and ready to play.  Her shining moment started when she was put into our first St. Anthony’s game this season, she was required to mark their very strong and fast midfielders.  From that point on she was placed in the defense, midfield or offense depending on where we needed her strength.  We will miss Anna Lieza Bradshaw as she continues her soccer career as a Cortland Red Dragon next year.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Caleigh Bennett

This player has been a starter for the past two years and a captain this year.  Her consistency on the field is a great example to our younger players. This player would constantly be the one offering to play a different position so drills could be successful.  As a senior, she would be the leader on and off the field. She was the one who most players looked to for guidance on the field or always a kind, encouraging word off the field.  She gave her all at every game and would drag herself off the field exhausted having tried her best for herself and her teammates.  We will truly miss Caleigh Bennett next year.

Most Valuable Player – Sarah Wood

This player started as one of the quieter players on the team.  As she became more comfortable with the speed of play on varsity and with her new teammates she achieved great success.  She became the player to mark by opposing teams since she was such a threat to their defense. Her explosive speed allowed her to net 9 goals and 16 assists in her career as a Firebird. She would constantly be working on the skills that we covered at practice which allowed not only herself to be successful, but her teammates as well.  She is one of the most unselfish players I have ever coached.  We will truly miss the humor, goofiness and skill of Sarah Wood next year.

Swimming

Most Improved – Sarah Campbell

Sarah Campbell has been a contributing member to the team since she joined last year, but she really came into her own this year.  Throughout the season, she dropped time in all of her events.  Sarah truly excelled at championships, earning 9th place in the 500 Free with a time of 5:42, 15 seconds faster than her time at tryouts.  She also dropped significant time in the 200 Free, posting an 11th place finish with a time of 2:10.  In addition, Sarah swam in our top 400 Free Relay, where she dropped 4 seconds, posting a best time of 102.37.  This hardworking sophomore is truly a rising star, and we look forward to seeing her continue to improve over the next two years.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Ciara Carr

Ciara Carr dedicated herself to the team this year.  Ciara constantly cheered for her teammates and built team spirit by making new members feel welcome and by encouraging spontaneous cheers and group hugs at every meet.  She was at every practice and challenged herself by leading her lane for many sets. Her commitment to being the best swimmer possible enabled her to achieve best times in the 100 Free and the 500 Free at Championships. Even during that meet Ciara put the team 1st, swimming back-to-back events at champs without a complaint.  The coaches are excited Ciara is only a junior, because we can’t wait to see what this motivated and enthusiastic young woman can achieve next season.

Most Valuable Player – Marisa Martinez

This year’s most valuable swimmer award goes to junior Marisa Martinez.  Marisa is an excellent swimmer who not only earns valuable points for the team during our dual meets, but also leads the team at practice.  She leads by action in all that she does, and she is dedicated to being the best athlete possible.  Marisa excelled at the Championship Meet, earning tenth place finishes in both the 100 Fly and the 200 Free and posting best times in each of these events.  She also won many first place finishes throughout the season.  This talented and highly motivated swimmer has only begun to hit her stride as a swimmer and will surely be a threat to our competitors in her final season next year.

Girls Tennis A

Most Improved – Katherine Huggard

With a team that shown a commitment and improvement of many players, this young lady consistently improved each and every time she stepped onto the courts.  Sophomore Katherine Huggard has demonstrated a determination and commitment to improving her tennis skills during our 2016 season. and is my choice for Most Improved Player.  Having the privilege to coach Katherine last year, as a freshman on our varsity b team, she came back stronger than ever, earning a top spot on our third doubles court.  Our season started off with a few injuries, but Katherine stepped up to the challenge and moved to play on the second doubles team, maintaining the edge that Kellenberg needed.  With a respectable record of 5-3, she played each match with a determination and focus like no other.  Her toughness and unflappable demeanor on the court, made each match exciting and competitive!  She continues to play in the off-season and I have no doubt will come back as a stronger player and competitor!

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Sydney Fischer

The Girl’s Varsity A Tennis Team has been incredibly honored to have this young lady since she was a freshman.  Her talent is undeniable, and she possesses a quiet confidence and competitive edge unlike no other athlete in our program.  Our Captain Senior Sydney Fischer has been a mentor and positive role model for the underclassmen, on and off the court!  She has demonstrated high level of play, good sportsmanship, commitment to her team and sport.  But most importantly, she possesses a kindness and intelligence that is respected and admired by all of her teammates and coaches.  Sydney was never without a smile and at each match she stepped onto the first singles court, with a determination and passion, which inspired and led her teammates through a victorious season!  Sydney Fischer is the obvious choice for the Bernie Ward Commitment Award!  We will miss her dearly, and wish her continued successes for the future!

Most Valuable Player – Emma Soccodato

Choosing the Most Valuable Player for the girls Varsity Tennis A team was a difficult decision.  I am proud to say all the athletes of our team have contributed to the success of our season.  But, there is one young lady who could be considered every coaches dream.  Her athleticism, commitment to her team and school, kindness and competitive edge always shown through each and every time she stepped foot on the court!  Sophomore Emma Soccodato is the ultimate example of what a Kellenberg athlete should be!  Her individual record for the season was 9-1 only losing in a higher division match.  To compliment Emma’s success, she has also been selected as a NSCHSAA All League Athlete!  During our matches and practices she displayed an enthusiasm and passion for the sport, which was contagious to her teammates.  Emma never had an unkind word for her opponents and always had a compliment for them during play.  Once her individual match was finished the first thing she would ask, was how everyone else was doing.  In a testament to her character, every time Emma played on the second singles court, opposing coaches and players had only compliments to give on her skills and good sportsmanship.  Always eager for feedback on how to improve, Emma displayed a grace and humility unlike any high school athlete I have ever met.  We are honored to have this young lady represent Kellenberg and expect even greater successes for her over the next few years!

Girls Tennis B

Most Improved – Jen Elbers

Picking one player for this award was very difficult as many players showed dramatic improvement throughout the season. Our decision was to give this award to Jen Elbers. Jen played fourth doubles and won six out of ten league matches and had one playoff win. She was very consistent in her play and never stopped trying. After losing badly to an opponent one week, she came back to defeat them the following week. She also lost her first set in a playoff match and came back to win her court in a super tiebreak. Jen’s skills at the net and her determination is what set her apart from the rest. Congratulations Jen! We will miss you next season.

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Lexi Deshommes

The most committed player for the Varsity Tennis B team displayed excellent sportsmanship and always had a smile on her face. She was the first to finish her laps and willingly worked with the alternates to improve their game. This player was the most enthusiastic at practice and made the team drills fun. When her court was forfeited she watched and cheered her teammates on. What we will remember most about this player was how she carried an injured opponent off the court. She is an excellent representation of what Kellenberg is all about. This year’s Bernie Ward Commitment Award goes to Lexi Deshommes. Congratulations Lexi!

Most Valuable Player – Juliana Cosenza

A valuable player is someone who consistently comes up with a win and does not give up when faced with a challenge. One player, who won eight out of our ten matches and both her playoff matches was Juliana Cosenza. Juliana played with a new partner this year and struggled initially to make their partnership work. She promised me before our matches started that she would remain positive and find a way to win. She was encouraging to her partner and only lost to one team. In our semi – finals match, she said she was not going to lose. She and her partner forced St. Anthony’s third doubles team into a super tie-break and handed them their first loss ever as a team. Thank you Juliana for ending the B squad’s season on a high note. We will certainly miss you next year! Congratulations!

Volleyball

Most Improved – Alyssa Boll

Each and every player on our 16 person roster finished the season with much better skills than when they began training in August, but Alyssa Boll truly came the farthest.  Stepping into the libero position cold, having not played that role in the 2015 season, can be (and certainly was) a daunting task.  This unique position requires an athlete to have sharp anticipation skills, superior reaction time, fluid motion to the ball, and absolutely no fear.  Alyssa always had the physical component covered, but she needed valuable court time in order to gain the confidence necessary to run the team’s offensive and defensive schemes.  September contests were challenging for all team members, and especially for Alyssa, as we were trying to establish a consistent rhythm.  After being relegated to a three rotation position rather than the libero’s six, Alyssa did not pout, she did not wallow.  She simply outworked everyone in the gym and empowered herself to be the backrow player in charge.  In her quiet yet intense way, she developed an incredible sense for the ball, many times knowing–even before the attacker  knew–where the ball was going to go!  Alyssa mastered a leadership role when the pressure of the match was at its highest, understanding what each player on our team needed in terms of encouragement.  By the midpoint of the season, she was firmly entrenched as our number one option off serve reception and our primary defender in the right back area.  Her 342 serves, 25 aces, 383 receptions, and 403 digs are a testament to how far an athlete can go when she has an outstanding work ethic and an overwhelming drive for her team’s success.  Congratulations to our Most Improved Player, Captain Alyssa Boll!

Bernie Ward Commitment Award – Megan Pfundstein

No matter what was asked of Megan Pfundstein, she always delivered.  Whether she was required to run a 5-1 offense on a team stacked with seniors in 2015 or she was told that she would be directing a 6-2 this season requiring her to be a front row attacker, Megan was “game.”  Her approach every day was to compete to the best of her ability, regardless of whatever offense she was asked to orchestrate.  That kind of dedication to our program and that ability to prioritize team success makes Megan the recipient of the Bernie Ward Commitment Award.

In her intense but stealthy manner, Megan began the season setting three rotations and hitting for the other three.  And while she showed great talent as an attacker, it soon became clear to the coaching staff that we needed Megan to have the ball in her hands, especially when the competition heated up and the pressure escalated.  Because of her unflappable demeanor and intuitive approach, Megan excelled at making spontaneous decisions based on the ebb and flow of a match.  Her 802 assists proved that she could connect with ALL of our hitters, and she continually perplexed our opponents by facing our outside hitters and then shooting a backset all the way across the court to our right side!  There is no doubt in our minds that we were blessed to have, not only the most talented setter in the NSCHSGAA, but also the one most dedicated to TEAM success!  Congratulations to our Commitment Award winner, Megan Pfundstein.

Most Valuable Player – Kiersten Cote

If you’ve ever attended one of our matches this year, it is very easy to spot Kiersten Cote in action.  Her quickness to the ball, her explosive jump, her speedy armswing, and her lethal serve all catch your eye.  And while these physical gifts are something at which to marvel, it is Kiersten’s interaction with her teammates and her unselfish approach to the game that make her our Most Valuable Player.

Unlike many talented players who tend to behave like prima donnas, Kiersten loves the grind.  She trains hard and she trains comprehensively, never cutting corners and always exhibiting a cooperative spirit when it comes to working on different approaches or techniques.  She truly LOVES the game of volleyball and LOVES playing with and for her teammates; she is enthralled with the spirit of camaraderie.

For the last two years, Kiersten has been a primary passer and hitter in our offense, helping us to an NSCHSGAA League Championship and New York State Catholic High School Championship last year and another NSCHSGAA title and runner-up finish at States this year.  At the State competition, she competed against St. Mary’s of Buffalo in the final, a team that is ranked #4 in NYS, and they had no answer for her.  She took 45 swings, had 20 kills, and only 3 errors against their formidable front-line.  Despite amassing 390 kills, 243 receptions, 31 solo blocks, 47 assist blocks, 283 digs, 36 aces, and a 92.9 service percentage, Kiersten remains humble and down-to-earth, making everyone feel comfortable and relaxed in her presence.  With her music speakers continually on hand, Kiersten literally “set the tone” for our practices, our pre-game, indeed our entire season with her enthusiasm, attention to detail, work ethic, and, yes, her crazy dance moves!!  Congratulations to our Most Valuable Player, Kiersten Cote.

On Thursday, December 22, members of Latin School C.R.O.S.S. continued their yearly tradition of Christmas caroling at the conclusion of trimester exams.  After the English exam, about 40 CROSS students got together for a brief rehearsal before heading to a lunch of pizza in the cafeteria.  Then, with red hats, some sleigh bells, and even a few reindeer antlers, they headed on a walk to The Sunrise.  The Sunrise residents were gathered in the main reception area and CROSS members (who were a particularly enthusiastic and musical group) entertained the residents and visiting guests for about 45 minutes.  After ending with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” the students circulated among the residents and personally wished them “Merry Christmas.”  Upon their return to school, all enjoyed a snack of Christmas cookies and hot chocolate before heading home for Christmas vacation!  The Latin School students and The Sunrise residents have enjoyed their visits with each other this trimester (a previous visit took place at the end of October) and the Christmas caroling remains one of the favorite and most rewarding CROSS events of the year!

Kellenberg Memorial Alumni Glenn O’Kane ’90 and Julia Galea ’10 give first STEM presentation of 2017.

The first STEM activity for 2017 was an informative discussion about the field of pharmacy presented by two Kellenberg Memorial alumni.  Mr. Glenn O’Kane ’90 and Ms. Julia Galea ’10 discussed the various career paths in the field of pharmacy including retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, research and entrepreneurial pathways.  Students attending the discussion learned that pharmacists serve as a vital link between doctors and patients. Since she recently graduated from the School of Pharmacy at Northeastern University, Ms. Galea was able to educate students about the coursework and clinical rotations required to complete a six-year degree in pharmacy. Mr. O’Kane impressed upon the students the fine attention to detail required to be a pharmacist, as well as, the importance of good communication skills with other medical professionals and the general public.

Troop 87 ventured out into freezing temperatures to camp at Alpine Scout Camp in Alpine, New Jersey on January 6, 2017. 16 scouts went about cooking, hiking, and various outdoor activities as the weather intensified into a steady snowstorm. The shelter of a warm cabin allowed time for training, advancement, meals, sleep, most importantly, a quick thaw in between snowball fights. The young scouts had the opportunity to witness where their scouting journey can take them. Sunday morning’s real-feel temperature of -1º Fahrenheit reminded the scouts that their training prepares them to face extreme challenges with ease.
