During this year’s February break, 16 scouts from Kellenberg Memorial’s Troop 87 had the opportunity to participate in a Disabilities Awareness Weekend.
On Saturday, each scout assumed a specific disability to experience the world from the perspective of a person with disabilities. Scouts learned of the challenges faced by individuals who are without the use of one of their five senses, or who otherwise have limited ambulatory abilities.
Scouts went about their daily activities facing new challenges. The troop worked together to cook and serve meals, navigate the property at Founders Hollow, and shared an afternoon group discussion about their experiences, lessons learned, and a new appreciation for the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
The scouts now prepare for their annual Lenten retreat on March 3rd and 4th.
