Article by Phoenix writer Griffin Strauss ’25:

For the first time, the Kellenberg Memorial Pipe Band marched their way into the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 16.

The Pipe Band sent ten of their players to march in the parade. Joining the students were Mr. Collins and Mr. Lynch, the moderators of the Pipe Band, and two former members of the Kellenberg Pipe Band, Anthony Schumacher 23’ and Mary Moore 23’.

The Pipers in the Parade, which has been held since 1762, marched from East 47th Street to 79th Street in front of the 2 million spectators watching the procession.

After arriving in New York City at 1:00 pm, the band prepared to begin marching, unsure of what the weather had in store. By 2:00, the weather proved beautiful with the bright sun shining on the performers.

The band was invited to play their bagpipes under the St. John’s University Pipe Band in the world famous parade.

“This massive milestone marked a highlight for the Kellenberg Memorial Pipe Band’s history as a club,” says Mr. Collins. Though it was only their first time playing their bagpipes in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the band hopes to join the marchers again soon.

Students interested in bagpipes should reach out to Mr. Collins.
