Article by Phoenix writer Grace Andino ’25:

On Sunday, January 28, Seniors Evans Linzey and Martine Demesyeux earned MVP honors at the NSCHSAA Track and Field League Championships.

Senior Evans Linzey is no stranger to the MVP title as this is his second year earning the prestigious award. Evans repeated as a triple gold medalist in the Winter Track and Field Championship and earned himself the title of MVP of the Boys NSCHSAA. Evans made history by setting a school record of 6.56 seconds in the 55-meter dash and ran the 300 meter in 36.47 seconds. Although he has stellar personal records, Evans also shines in the boy’s relay. Coach Joseph Moncada’s “sprint machine” of Evans, Junior Nicolas Baldwin, Junior Mario Sanabria, and Freshman Damion Gordon Jr. dominate in the 4×200 with Evans anchoring victories all over the Metropolitan area.

For Evans, the thrill of competing and accomplishing his goals triumphs over the setbacks he faces. When asked about his approach to staying motivated, Evans shared, “Sometimes it is hard, but I aim to stay disciplined and consistent towards my goals. I started running track at Kellenberg during the Winter 2020/2021 season. I mainly ran to keep in shape for baseball season, but I loved the sense of camaraderie and motivation among the team and decided to stick with running. I am very humbled to win the MVP award two years in a row and love the opportunity to push myself to my limit physically and mentally in a race.”

In a double feat, Senior Martine Demesyeux earned herself the MVP of the Girls Championship Meet for the Field Events. Martine won the triple jump with her best mark of 34-11.50. With encouragement and motivation, Martine, part of Coach Amanda Green’s “Jump U”, guided her teammates Sophomore Keierra Ndukwu, Junior Sienna Pimentel, and Senior Brooke Bowen to a 1-2-3-5 podium sweep respectively.

Martine says, “My favorite part of track is my ability to push myself to do better and achieve new goals. In track, every improvement is an improvement nonetheless. Whether it’s jumping farther or simply improving the technique of the jump. It’s a sport where growth is always possible! The MVP award was not only a representation of my physical ability, but a recognition of the hard work that I put in.”

Kellenberg is extremely proud of Evans Linzey and Martine Demesyeux and their dedication to “Trusting the Process” throughout the Track and Field program.
